A house rarely needs rewiring overnight, but there are clear signs the wiring is past its best. The big ones are a fuse box still fitted with rewireable fuses (the ones you rewire with a strip of wire rather than a switch to reset), cables with a rubber or fabric-woven covering rather than modern PVC, and sockets that are warm to the touch, discoloured, scorched or crackle when you use them. Add to that too few sockets so extension leads are everywhere, lights that dim or flicker when the kettle goes on, and a persistent smell of hot plastic, and the case builds quickly.
None of these means panic, but together they mean it's worth a proper look. Plenty of Derby's older terraces around Normanton and the Arboretum, and the between-the-wars semis across Littleover, Mickleover and Allestree, are still running installations that were never designed for a modern home full of appliances and chargers. We inspect and test before we ever recommend a rewire, so you get an honest answer: a partial rewire, a fuse box upgrade or the full job, whatever your home actually needs. We're NAPIT registered and City & Guilds qualified, and there's a fixed written price before any work starts.
The tell-tale signs
Rewireable fuses, fabric or rubber-coated cables, warm or scorched sockets and too few of them all point to ageing wiring.
Tested before advised
We inspect and test first, so a rewire is only ever recommended when the wiring genuinely needs it.
Partial or full
Not every home needs the whole job. We'll tell you honestly whether a partial rewire or a fuse box upgrade will do.
Your questions, answered
How old does wiring have to be before it needs replacing?
There's no fixed age, but installations more than about thirty years old often want attention, and anything with rewireable fuses or fabric-coated cable is usually well overdue. We test the actual condition rather than going by age alone.
Can you rewire just part of the house?
Often, yes. If the fault or wear is confined to certain circuits, a partial rewire can bring those up to standard without disturbing the rest. We inspect first and tell you honestly what's needed.
How can I be sure before committing to a rewire?
Have an inspection and test carried out. It checks the wiring, fuse box, sockets and earthing and tells you in plain terms what's safe and what isn't, so you're never guessing. We'll never recommend a rewire you don't need.
