Spondon is a village suburb on the east side of Derby, close to Pride Park and the A52. Its old core sits on a hill, ringed by newer streets.

An old hilltop village inside the city
Spondon is in the Domesday Book of 1086. A great fire in the 1300s burned most of the old village. So most of its oldest homes date from the 1700s. The timber-framed Grange on Park Road is older still.
The village joined the City of Derby in 1968. It was already a big place. About 11,500 people lived here in 1961. By 2011 it was over 12,300.
The old core around Sitwell Street, Church Hill and Park Road is the Spondon Conservation Area, set up in 1975. Extra planning rules here cover doors, windows and roofs that face the road. Spondon has 17 listed buildings. The Homestead, built in 1740, is Grade I.
So most streets mix old and new. A 1700s house may have had wiring added in stages over many years. A newer house on the edge of the village may still have an early board with no RCD.
